Hydrogen Economy

Hydrogen and fuel cells will play a crucial role in a sustainable energy supply and have become one of the key technologies of the 21st century. "Green" hydrogen, which is produced carbon-neutral from renewable electricity, offers great potential in this regard, especially for Baden-Württemberg as an industrial and technology location. The Ministry of the Environment is therefore supporting the production and use of "green" hydrogen with various research and funding programs. In its Hydrogen Roadmap Baden-Württemberg, published in December 2020, the Ministry of the Environment shows the way forward for the development of a hydrogen economy in the state.

First Progress Report on the Baden-Württemberg Hydrogen Roadmap

Green hydrogen – generated carbon-neutrally from renewable electricity – offers great potential, especially for Baden-Württemberg as an industrial and technology location. To leverage this, the Ministry of the Environment has drawn up a roadmap for establishing a hydrogen economy in Baden-Württemberg. This roadmap was supplemented by further fields of action in the first progress report 2023.

Hydrogen Platform H2BW

The new hydrogen platform H2BW is intended to provide a visible and cross-sectoral umbrella for Baden-Württemberg's many hydrogen and fuel activities. The focus of the tasks lies on implementing the measures of the hydrogen roadmap, which describes the country's path to becoming a leading location for hydrogen and fuel cell technologies.

Funding opportunities

Hydrogen and fuel cell technologies will play a key role in the further transformation of energy systems and a far-reaching switch to innovative and low-emission technologies. With the funding programs "Future Program Hydrogen BW" and "Model Region Green Hydrogen", the state is helping to establish a sustainable hydrogen economy in Baden-Württemberg.
