As part of the EU Strategy for the Danube Region, Baden-Württemberg has been involved in a bioenergy partnership with Serbia since 2014. The aim of the partnership is successful climate protection, the expansion and improvement of renewable energies and a general strengthening of the economy of the Danube region.

The Bioenergy Partnership is about exchanges at the political and scientific level, and above all, practical cooperation between local companies. On the policy side, favorable framework conditions are necessary in order to promote the desired expansion of bioenergy all over Europe. In the partnership, the Ministry of Environment, Climate Protection and the Energy Sector Baden-Württemberg works closely with the Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) Gm

Advantages

Within the framework of a bioenergy partnership, synergies with the European, environmental and economic policy interests of the state of Baden-Württemberg can be identified and used. The current debate on the future of bioenergy and fossil fuels shows that there is still a lack of supportive framework conditions and international cooperation for the further expansion of bioenergy and a European bioenergy market.
In Serbia and throughout the Southeast European market, the use of firewood is widespread. However, there is also a huge potential for using bioenergy products from forestry and agriculture to generate heat and electricity.

Companies and market participants of the German bioenergy industry are international leaders in the development of bioenergy technologies and regional energy concepts. Nevertheless, they are barely present on the Serbian and Southeast European market.

As part of the German Climate Technology Initiative (DKTI), the Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) GmbH is currently implementing in Serbia a project for the development of a sustainable bioenergy market on behalf of the German Federal Government. The bioenergy partnership brings together political decision-makers, municipalities, universities, associations and companies from Baden-Württemberg and Serbia.

Events and activities

In order to ensure the implementation and encourage lively exchange, activities have regularly taken place since the kick-off event in 2014.Here you will find an overview.
